Iran: US Keeps Violating UNSCR 2231 despite ICJ Rejection

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran’s Envoy to the UN Majid Takht Ravanchi said the United States continues to violate the Security Council Resolution 2231 even if the International Court of Justice has rejected its preliminary objection to Iran's lawsuit on Washington's violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity.

"US also still violating UNSCR 2231 with illegal sanctions on Iran," Takht Ravanchi wrote on his Twitter page on Friday, reiterating Washington’s disappointment at ICJ.

He went on to say that the ne US administration is pretending to pursue multilateralism while following the previous one’s track.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) — also known as the World Court — rejected the arguments made by Washington that the lawsuit was outside the jurisdiction of the tribunal.

Tehran had filed the case with the ICJ in 2018 after then US president Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and reinstated anti-Iran sanctions.

The lawsuit said the US sanctions against Iran violate the 1955 Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights between the two countries, causing “hardship and suffering” and “ruining millions of lives.”

The US argued that the case should be thrown out by the ICJ for lack of jurisdiction and admissibility.

The Hague-based court, however, said the terms of the 1955 treaty provided a basis for the case to proceed in the international body.

Reacting to the ruling, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said, “We have great respect for the International Court of Justice. At the same time, we are disappointed that the court did not accept our well-founded legal arguments, that the case Iran brought is outside the court's jurisdiction, and the court should not hear it.”

In relevant remarks on Thursday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday felicitated the country's people on the recent ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in rejection of the US preliminary objection to Iran's lawsuit on Washington's violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity.

President Rouhani made the remarks, addressing the inauguration ceremony of five industrial projects in Zanjan Province in Northwestern Iran on Thursday via video conference.

Enemies in vain were to draw dark days for Iran to prevent the country from breathing, he added.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh had said on Wednesday that the International Court of Justice has upheld jurisdiction on the case of the US-Iran Amity Treaty Dispute.

According to him, the International Court of Justice rejected the preliminary objections of the United States and announced that it has jurisdiction over the case.
