Iran says ready to help solve humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan

Speaking in the 3rd Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan held in New Delhi, India, on Wednesday, Shamkhani reminded that the first and second editions of the meeting were held in Tehran and issues like terrorism, development, and repairing damages inflicted by the US and the West were covered there.

Shamkhani said that holding three rounds of talks between national security council chairs of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries before the US withdrawal from Afghanistan was indicative of the neighbors’ true understanding, but the US miscalculated once again.

He highlighted Iran’s three concerns on the current situation in Afghanistan, naming interference of some countries in transferring terrorist agents to Afghanistan, expansion of poverty and humanitarian crisis, and the immigration crisis that necessitates aids for Afghan people to be able to stay in their own country.

Iran’s SNSC secretary also said that the countries participating in the meeting had several tasks to do, including holding those responsible for the current situation in Afghanistan accountable, making collective endeavor to form an all-inclusive government, and countering humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

Pressuring the US to release Afghan funds abroad, fighting against terrorism in Afghanistan, and helping solve the immigration crisis were among other tasks, according to the official.

Elsewhere in his speech, Shamkhani said that the US occupied Afghanistan 20 years ago under the pretext of fighting terrorism, but it left a crisis-stricken Afghanistan behind, instead of making an inspiring exemplary country as the US used to claim in early years of occupation.

Shamkhani said that everyone in the world witnessed how the US-made military and security system in Afghanistan collapsed and the US had to escape the country in a scandalous manner.

This should be a lesson for those countries that choose to Rely on foreign powers like the US, instead of relying on their own capacities, he added.

The Islamic Republic of Iran refused to participate in any US-led peace processes and formats because Iran knew that the US’ peace-seeking hype was only a cover to free itself from the swamp it has made in Afghanistan, Shamkhani continued.

Iran puts emphasis on formats that can be useful for the Afghan nation, adding that Iran urges the United Nations to be the axis of talks to help Afghanistan, the Iranian official said.

He also said that the US and its allies that had occupied Afghanistan for 20 years should pay compensation for the damages and casualties they have made.

Shamkhani urged formation of a government that includes all groups and ethnicities in Afghanistan and also warned against the presence and growth of ISIS and other terrorist groups in the country.
